Unfolded - JAPANESE CULTURE REFLECTED IN HINA DOLLS. 7:PM Artist Fumino
Hora, a native of Tokyo, will introduce her works of art and the
historical and cultural background behind them in a power-point
presentation. The history of 'Hina" goes back to the 17th Century.
Traditionally, Japanese parents bought the set of dolls upon the birth of
their daughter. After marriage, the girl was allowed to take the dolls to
her husband's house. The elegant dollhouse represented the parents' ideal
of their daughter's happiness. Is there a contradiction between the
identity of the female and the preservation of traditions? When women wish
to improve the status of their lives, do beautiful traditions fade away?
Fumino's stunning sculptures explore these and more questions. Members
free, non-members $5.00. See the Museum's
website for more details. Fumino
